In 1 John 4, the Apostle John writes that perfect love casts out fear. This is a passage that is worth meditating on and laying on our hearts for times of fear or worry (whether you're going through that now or whether there are days ahead in which you will know the pressing weight of fears as circumstances change in your life). But what is this perfect love that casts out our fear?
John goes on to explain that "fear has to do with punishment" and he directs the Christian believer to love the One who has cast out fear by casting down His Son to undergo the punishment for sins in our place. This is unmistakably on display as a preview in Genesis 45 in a riveting scene that unfolds in the house of Joseph! We're to see that grace is all part of one awesome story of God's redeeming love for His people!
Joseph serves as a type (a foreshadowing figure) of the greater Redeemer of Israel. This is why Old Testament scenes take on added weight and significance in light of Christ's gracious intervention. In grace and kindness, he calls us to him saying, "Come near to me". And as we study the events in Genesis 45 we realize that this good news has been proclaimed since the fall of mankind!
So let us gather together to be fed through the Scriptures and unified through the Worship of our Triune God!
